Music-wise, what was the first 45, single or download you bought?
Submitted by Paddy Melt Wagon.
It was a 45.
What fictional creature do you wish were real?
I wish existing animals came in abnormal sizes. And I don't just mean those little horsies; I mean a giraffe that could live in an aquarium and a bumblebee the size of a lapdog.
Do you have a green thumb?
I have enthusiasm.
What's your favorite blend or brand of coffee or tea?
I love roast green tea.
If you could watch any movie on the big screen right at this moment, what would it be?
Something big and rambling, with great vistas that makes your stomach do a little flip as it swoops around. Lawrence of Arabia? Seven Samurai maybe. Not Giant because I never liked it that much. Oooh, I know, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
What's the most extreme weather you've been in? A memorable storm? Heat wave? Or something else?
The evening of the day John and I were married there was a terrific snowstorm. The city shut down and we could see across Lake Shore Drive from our hotel. It was quiet and empty and lovely. John had forgotten his coat but we went out anyway and threw some of the snow around.
I remember the Chicago Blizzard of Seventy-Nine from when I was younger, too. The snow was so high, they had to come by and push the plowed hills away from the streets. They did this from the middle so there was a great set of steps lining our street. And they plowed the street wider than it actually was (there were no curbs) so it was very other-worldly.
What's your favorite drink or cocktail? What's in it?
Question submitted by charm.vox.com
I love champage but probably because I only have it so rarely.
Well, I met Col. Saunders at a boy scout jamboree when I was young. I shook Nixon's hand in a department store in Manhattan. I saw Corey Hart in the street once (also New York). I saw Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller's girlfriend) in the Met.
What's your worst travelling story? Horrible airport experience? Seasickness?
There was that queasy PHL to ORD plane ride I took after drinking a little carton of bad milk. Way to become obsessive about sniffing milk first the rest of my life! Woo!
I remember being stuck in the middle of the Fox River in IL on a friends' motor boat (I was twelve or so). The engine had died and we sat there for hours, getting hungrier, until a passing boat by towed us to shore.
On my first trip to England, I had an earache on the plane and we got stuck in a holding pattern (swooping up and down in a dramatic spiral) while I tried desperately and in pain to clear my ear for half an hour.
There have been other inconveniences but nothing dire, no permanent damage. Unless you count the milk thing, but that was a gift, really.
